The 500-Game Man – Mike Heath, thank you for everything you have given over the years. WP and Nomads are lucky to have you.
A much-respected and admired WP Nomad, Mike, played his 500th game at our recent visit to Parow Golf Club, an achievement that has only been reached by 4 other WP Nomads to date. Please take a moment to read through what is a truly wonderful Nomad career.
Mike was proposed as a WP Nomad by Ted Thornbury in 1979 and played nearly every game until he was inducted as WP Nomad at Mowbray at the Gold Cup game in December 1982. He had played 40 games before he was inducted. That’s commitment
Mike has served on the WP Committee since 2007 in some form. He was the PRO from 2007 to 2011, then moved to Membership Officer from 2011 to 2013. He was the Nationals Co-Ordinator from 2005 to 2022, and served on the Tournament Committee for all 4 National Tournaments hosted by WP Nomads to date. Mike was also involved in planning WP 40th, 45th, 50th, 55th and 60th Anniversaries. His playing record has the following highlights.
– Mike as attended 37 SA National Tournaments, winning the Disa Bowl twice 1993 and 2017, plus the overall A Division and Eclectic in East London in 1996
– He has won 7 Silver Salvers with his best score being 45 points off a 6 handicap (69 gross)
– He won the Gary Player Plate in 2013, won the Gary Player Main in 2016 & 2021 all while partnering Ken Walker
– He attended every Seaboard weekend up to 2021 and has attended 99% of the Captains Away Weekends
– Awarded Honorary Membership of WP Nomads in 2006 and the John Pickering Trophy in April 2019
– Mike has also been very generous sponsor of our monthly games where the Framing Centre sponsors a Runner-Up divisional prize.
Mikes services to golf are not confined to Nomads. He’s represented Rondebosch Golf Club in all leagues (Premier, Challenge and Masters), served on the committee at for 19 years, became Captain in 1994 and was awarded Life Membership in 2004, later becaming President in 2014 (and still serves the club in that capacity today).
